SUMMARY.
Snowball is a pig who makes many attempts to spread Animalism worldwide and improve Animal Farm. His ideas, however, lead to his downfall. Relying only on his logic to gain other’s influence, he is no match for Napoleon. Napoleon is an a pig who is an opportunist. He never shows interest in the strength of Animal Farm but only in the strength of his own power. He is elected leader of Animal Farm and disciplines all the animals. He becomes a dictator and makes all the animals work for him. The book starts out on a farm in England, around the late 1800’s. An old pig named Old Major is giving a speech in the barn to all the other animals. His speech is about a dream he had where the animals overruled humans. He told everyone that there would be rebellion against the humans, and the farmer, Mr. Jones. After the rebellion, the animals would run the farm and feed themselves. Old Major dies and the pigs become the leaders of the farm animals. They made the rules and gave themselves more rights than any of the other animals. The pigs held meetings every week to discuss the business of the farm. When the humans decide to fight back, the animals are prepared and win the battle. The humans return and destroy the windmill that the animals were building to generate electricity and save labor. During the winter, food is rationed and the animals face near starvation. Soon after, the pigs invite their human neighbors to inspect Animal Farm and they congratulate them on how efficient Animal Farm is. They tell them that Animal Farm did more work and required less food than any farm in the county. After it is discovered that someone cheated in a card game, the animals watching this realize that they can no longer tell the difference between the pigs and humans. This story takes place on Manor Farm, which is renamed Animal Farm after the animals overrule Mr. Jones, the farmer. This imaginary farm is in England in the early 1900’s.
