Animal Farm is an allegorical tale about the Russian Revolution and published in 1945 by George Orwell. George Orwell writes Animal Farm from a pessimistic point of view of human nature, Animalism, Communism and the Russian Revolution. Orwell’s point of view on the Russian Revolution is that it went all wrong. He only sees the negative side. Orwell shows the animals in Animal Farm initially have good intentions. Orwell also outlines the qualities of human nature. The animals in Animal Farm were not picked at random, but had a meaning to real life, and finally Orwell’s pessimistic view on Animalism will be discussed in this essay.
George Orwell presents a point of view that the Russian Revolution went horribly wrong. He presents no evidence of a change for the better. This means that Orwell only sees the negative point of view on the Russian Revolution. His tale provides evidence of this. The animals start realising that their lives were just as bad as when Mr Jones was in control. They were just as hungry, just as miserable and still slaves of tyranny and corruption. There is no hope or sign of change from this miserable world shown and therefor signals Orwell’s pessimistic view on the Russian Revolution.
The animals in Animal Farm were treated badly by Mr Jones and the animals suffered hunger, poor health and beatings. The animals finally rebelled against Jones in hope to end their misery and enslavement and have a better life. The animals then get a leader, Napolean, without intending to.
All the animals, including the pigs, first have good intentions and they all wanted to be equal and control their own produce from their hard work. Hence, the principles of Animalism were made and put to practice. The principles of Animalism is morally good, but cannot work because all human societies must have a leader to control the aspects of leadership and allows space for power humger and corruption. Orwell presents all this in the book.
The qualities of human nature are represented in the book as easily corrupted by power. The first example of human corruption is Mr Jones. He took advantage of his position of power and used the animals to his profit. He didn’t care about the animals health or wellbeing. This shows how easy human corruption is when Napolean took the seat of power and expelled Snowball so that he maintained his seat of power. Napolean also used fear to manipulate the animals into doing his will so that he would get what he wants. These examples show that human nature can be easely corrupted.
George Orwell presents a pessimistic view of Animalism. He mainly writes about how Animalism/Communism could never work. He presents this view with Benjamin, the long lived donkey, when he writes “Benjaminwas the only animal who did not side with eitherfaction. He refused to believe either that food would become more plentiful or that the windmill would save work. Windmill or no windmill, he said, life would go on as it had always gone – that is, badly.” (Orwell, G, 1945, Pg 34). This clearly shows George Orwell’s pessimistic view on Animalism and how it could not work.
All the characters in Animal Farm are presented as farm animals, including pigs, sheep, donkies and so on. All these animals have well known characteristics that corresponds to their allegorical charactecter. An example of this representation is the sheep. The sheep are known as stupid animals who can’t think for themselves and need leaders to tell them what to do and where to go and in the book Napolean can easely get the sheep to do his will. This also represents the peasents in real life who also unquestioningly did what they were told, with no arguments.
On the other hand, some people are not as easely corrupted by power, and therefor Animalism could be a good system. However, Animalism could only work if human nature could not be easely corrupted.
In conclusion, George Orwell presents a pessimistic view on the Russian Revolution. His opinion on the Russian Revolution is that people could have good intentions but are easily corrupted so when someone gains a seat of power he/she will be corrupted. This is why Animalism could no work, as humans are easily corrupted.
