The opening lines by Cleopatra and Charmian evokes their isolation inside the monument.
” O, Charmian I will never go from hence.”
” Be comforted dear madam.”
This is strange as her love for Antony surpasses all limits. One would think and believe that for someone that is in love to this degree and the thought of seeing her lover for the last time and after all he is dying she would fear nothing in her final quest to see him one more time. Under these circumstances Cleopatra did not fear death at all, as the awesome tragedy has struck her already. Whilst Antony is in her arms she pledges to him that she will never trust Caesar or anyone close to him. Her sense of change is felt at this moment in that she is already preparing herself for when she will be without Antony. Cleopatra’s awareness is shattered with the fear that she has for herself. Antony asks of her to forget his end and only remember his greatest fortunes, which displays the heroic image that is within him. Although Antony is very modest in his own portrayal.
” The miserable change now at my end lament nor sorrow at,but please your thoughts in feeding them with those my former fortunes.”
And with this he is he is virtually saying to remember him in his glory days rather than being sorrowful over his death. To die in her arms was the ultimate reward. This is recognized very strongly by Cleopatra.
” The varying shore o’ th’ world O’ Antony, Antony, Antony! Help Charmian, help Iras, help: help, friends below lets draw him hither.”
There is a change present, as Cleopatra is now finally faced with the ultimate tragedy of life, the death of her most treasured lover, Antony. Throughout the play the two have been like Gods: Cleopatra likened to the planet Venus, goddess of love, Antony likened to Mars.
Antony: ” I am dying,Egypt, dying. Give me some wine and let me speak a little.”
Antony’s reference to Cleopatra is to Egypt, as she was so close to the people and the exotic and fertile land that she was Egypt. His thoughts are reeling the realisation that he is dying and will not live to see her again.
” Give me some wine and let me speak.”
In reply Cleopatra states: “No let me speak.”
thus, allowing Antony’s last breath to last so as she could be with him for as long as possible; for her lover awaits his death. he has accepted her weaknesses within the shadows of death. His only thoughts are that she should ensure her own safety: being humble with Caesar. When he dies the entire world is shattered for her, as Antony meant everything to her.
” The crown o’ the earth doth melt. My Lord! o’ withered is the garland of war. The soldiers pole is fall’n young boys and girl are level now with men. The odds is gone, and there is nothing left remarkable against the visiting moon.”
Cleopatra is also shattered with her very own fear of death. Antony”s desire is to be master of himself has been acquired in his death, not by suicide but with his reunion with Cleopatra and the world she represents. His final words are convincing and restore true honour.
” The miserable change now at my end lament nor sorrow at, but please your thoughts in feeding them my former fortunes, wherein I lived the greatest of Prince O’ the world, the noblest; and do now basely die, now cowardly put off my helmet to my countrymen-A Roman by a Roman valiantly vanquished. Now my spirit is going. I can no more.”
His final words give such beauty and sorrow as he laments his end.
” A Roman till the end.”
The feeling of an undying love is felt from Antony. A spiritual content is felt with such loyalty to his Queen Cleopatra is an unsurpassed honour. And, for him to die in her arms is the ultimate fulfillment he can present to her. His words speak such truth and are deep within his heart and such desire for her.
Antony’s love for Cleopatra is seen as being beyond this world and is strongly suggested as an eternal love that they had for each other. This love will be remembered forever in time. The love that is seen and portrayed is such that it did not wilter regardless of the destructive forces that Caesar employs for his own political gain. True love will not weaken, rather, it will gain strength and momentum to fully encounter all forces.
