Blame the Three Witches (Macbeth)
Go through why Shakespeare makes Macbeth such a tragedy and who is to blame?
In “Macbeth”, William Shakespeare creates the characters of the three witches and leads the audience to feel that the three witches are evil and is responsible for all the tragedy and unfortunate event throughout the play Macbeth. I feel that the three witches are responsible for all the tragedy in the play because, if they have not told Macbeth that he will be king, have not turned him into evil, and have not showed him the apparitions which caused him to kill Macduff’s wife and children, there will be no tragedy in the play.
It all started when the three witches said this in Act 1 scene 3, “All hail Macbeth, Thane of Glamis! All hail Macbeth, Thane of Cawdor! All hail Macbeth, which shall be king hereafter!” Shakespeare uses the two words; “All hail” to make the audience and Macbeth feel that Macbeth is going to be a very high positioned lord, and eventually become the king, these two words are persuasive, therefore causes Macbeth to be lured into killing Duncan and other killings by the three witches.
Although Lady Macbeth planned the killing of Duncan, Macbeth killed other people, but it was the three witches who told Macbeth to do this and that, and is the back stager of all the tragedies in the play. As in Act 1 scene 1, the three witches used expressions of evil for example, “fair is foul, and foul is fair”, and it proofs that the three witches are evil and is up to no good. Shakespeare uses the words, foul and fair to make the audience feel that the three witches think that foul things are good, and good things are foul. This tells that they will meet Macbeth, therefore is showing that they are planning something evil, and in Act 1 scene 3, the three witches are implying to Macbeth that he should kill the king (Which Macbeth did kill).
Furthermore, as in Act 4 scene1, they had made a potion, and let Macbeth drink it; therefore he can see the apparitions, which led him to kill Macduff’s children and wife and children and wife. The apparitions use the phrase, “for none of woman born shall harm Macbeth”. This makes Macbeth feels powerful, therefore has the confident to kill Macduff’s wife and children. Shakespeare uses objects that are poisonous in the witches’ potion in order for him to see the apparitions, for example, “Scale of dragon, tooth of wolf; Witches mummy: maw and gulf, Of the ravined salt-sea shark; Root of hemlock, digged i’ th’ dark…” This clearly shows that the potion is poisonous, and will lead Macbeth into something evil (The Apparitions) which caused Macbeth to kill Macduff’s wife and children.
After all, I believe that William Shakespeare creates the characters of the three witches, and led the audience to believe that they are the evil characters in the play, and has caused all the tragedy and unfortunate events in the play, therefore should be responsible for all the tragedy and the unfortunate events throughout the play.
