Catcher in the Rye
Holden never seems to be able to find himself…

“People often say that this or that person had not yet found himself. But the self is not something one finds, it is something one creates.” (Thomas Szasz)
I believe this quote relates to the Catcher in the Rye very well. This is mostly due to the fact that Holden never seems to be able to find himself. He is always complaining and never seems like he is trying to do something to help himself get better, and if he does do something beneficial to himself, he gets angry annoyed, or criticizes people. This relates even more to the book because I think Holden has no intention of finding himself and does not seem to want to create himself either. He is always dwelling on the past and how many bad things have happened to him, as well as how his emotions and mindset plays on him. He always seems like he wants to hurt himself because of the self image that he has and it is really hurting him. I think the self image comes from his brother dying and he does not think he deserves to live because his brother was so brilliant and he thinks that he is not.
