Character Analysis From Edgar Allan Poe’s Story “A Tell-tale Heart”

This is an assignment I wrote for my 8th grade English class, had it saved on my computer, read it, and thought it was interesting, so I posted it.

In Edgar Allan Poe’s story “A Tell-Tale Heart,” he writes about a man that has killed the old man that he has been taking care of. The character claims to be perfectly sane, but then, he says that it’s the old man’s eye that provokes him to commit the murder. No sane person would do that, and through these next paragraphs, I hope that I will be able to show you that the character is in fact, insane.

One way that the character shows his insanity through his actions. He clains to be sane, and acts calm, but then, later on in the story, he acts panicky and nervous. He murdered the old man, cut of his head, arms, and legs, then hid the body under the floor boards in the old man’s bedroom. When some policemen stopped by a short time later, he invited them in to sit down, in the very room where the body was hidden. He acted calm and collected at first, but as the night went on, he became more and more panicky when he thought he could hear the heart beat of the old man, and finally uncovered where the body was hidden.

The other characters had different reactions to the narrorator and his actions. The old man reacted with terror, knowing that he was going to be murdered. The policemen’s reactions were that they thought the man was crazy, because of how he was screaming and throwing his chair around, trying to cover the sound of the heart beat.

So, in conclusion, this is why I say that the narrorator is insane. I believe that anyone who is sane, would not kill a man because of what his eye looks like. I really enjoyed this story, Edgar Allan Poe made the character so well, and he seemed real to me.Blah this is a report I had to write for my english class, and I thought I’d ask you guys what you think of it..

Good one! Even from 8th grade! I’m a huge fan of all things Poe!!
The first clue you actually get from Poe (and you mention this a few times) is that sane people do not constantly prattle on about their own sanity! Find and read Poe’s “The Bells” AWESOME!!
