Characteristics of Odysseus

The first Research Paper I’ve ever written so bear with me.

Leaders contain certain characteristics that cause him or her to be effective. These traits set them apart from atrocious leaders or successful ones. In The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus has special persona too. Odysseus has positive qualities that cause him to be unbeatable. Odysseus is an effective leader because he is adroit, confident, and patient.

To begin, Odysseus is adroit on many occasions in The Odyssey. Odysseus is evidently adroit when “He did not miss” (Homer 242). Odysseus has enough skill to shoot an arrow through twelve axes. He is able to string the bow too, while no other can.  This shows how Odysseus was able to do something so hard none of the numerous suitors could do it. Additionally, another example is “Noman is what mother and father call me” (Homer 107). This shows how cunning he is by knowing the Cyclops would scream no man is hurting me. Thus, Odysseus can escape without worrying about the other Cyclops. Odysseus is very intelligent and thought ahead. One can see Odysseus is adroit because of many of his life experiences; he is skillful both physically and mentally.

Subsequently, Odysseus is often victorious because of his confidence. His confidence helps him cope with many quagmires. For example, Odysseus shows a lot of self-pride and confidence as he “Stript off his rags, and leapt upon the great doorstone, holding the bow and the quiver full of arrows,” (Homer 243). Odysseus is ready to reveal himself to the suitors and to fight off all of the suitors at that moment. Odysseus had enough confidence in himself; he believed that him and his few companions could take down copious suitors. His confidence made him effective because he was able to pursue the suitors and conquer them. Furthermore, Odysseus’s confidence aids him when “ Ah, Circe, how could you bid me be gentle to you…” (Homer 119). Odysseus was confident in his intelligence and skill enough to enter the house of Circe. He entered knowing that he would be able to manipulate Circe into getting his companions back. This helped Odysseus because he got his companions back and Circe helped him with his voyage. Therefore, Odysseus is a confident man, which leads to many triumphs.

Moreover, patience is a virtue, and Odysseus has a large amount of it.  Odysseus often uses patience to wait for the opportune moment to use his plan. One occasion he was patient was when he and his men “trusted the sharp point into his eye” (Homer 107). Odysseus’s men thought the best option was to kill the Cyclops, but Odysseus knew that that was a sudden move. He knew his men and him could not move the boulder, thus they needed to trick Polyphemos into opening the doorway. Therefore, by poking him in the eye he would scream in pain and open the door. This shows how Odysseus realized that they would not be able to get out by quickly poking the Cyclops and killing it. He knew that he must do it in a slower approach.  Furthermore, Odysseus is patient when Iros says” Get away from the door, graybeard” (Homer 204). This shows Odysseus’s patience because Iros was maltreating him all through Odysseus’s stay and Odysseus did not once say that he was no ordinary man and that it was his kingdom. He waited until only him and his companions were armed to fight, not when he was angered. Thus, Odysseus is easily a patient man.

Overall, Odysseus is often adroit, confidant, and patient. These traits make him an effective leader. One can say Odysseus has many special traits as other great leaders do. All leaders magnificent and horrid have special characteristics that set them apart from others. Certain characteristics, which are positive, can make a leader effective, such as Odysseus.
