John Updike Has Passed
Rambling about Updike.
I’ve only read one of his books so far and I’m currently on his second novel in the Rabbit quadrilogy (is that right?). I’ve never read a screenplay, but that’s what I think of when I read his stuff, like everything is so perfectly explained. A character doesn’t just lean over to talk, he “sidles a conspiratorial inch closer at the bar.” A refrigerator isn’t a refrigerator, just because Updike is awesome, he calls it an “eight foot frozen food locker.” I mean c’mon! Maybe I just haven’t read enough literature, I mean I’ve read quite a bit, but I’m still young and haven’t read ALL the classics, but I’ve read quite a few, and none of the other authors writing (Kerouac, Vonnegut, Austen, Verne (his stuff isn’t that great anyhow, just really enjoyable) Dostoevsky) has impressed me as much as Updike has. I watched an interview with Updike where the interviewer commented on how vivid Updike’s writing was. As a young reader I felt very relieved to realize that is a talent commonly attributed to him, I felt pretty vindicated.
To others who like to write, I have a question for you. Were your aspirations to write hurt a little when you read Updike? That was definitely something that struck me right off the bat. Do I have to be THIS good to write? How can I ever compare to this stuff. It’s very discouraging I feel.
Maybe yall can tell, but this is my first entry on this website. I Stumbel Upon’d a top ten list of pay-for-writing websites, and chose to take up one, considering I have an exam to study for and this can kill time.
Hope you liked this awfulness. Whoever else is interested in Updike, maybe write a response to this or talk about what you think of him. He’s awesome!!!!
