Lord of the Flies: Controversy
Explains controversy in the novel by William Golding.
The controversy between Jack and Ralph is the way they want to lead the group. Ralph wants to make everything a group decision, whereas Jack very bossy and decides things for himself. In my essay I am taking on the persona of Ralph.
Jack and I have differing views on how the group should act, and who should be in power. On the first day I was elected the leader. As the leader we came up with some simple rules for us to live by. For a while everyone had been following the rules but they started to ignore them. I called a meeting to tell every why we have rules and what happens when they are not followed. I told everybody “We have a lot of assemblies. Everybody enjoys speaking and being together. We decide things. But they don’t get done.”
Jack has been trying to gain power over me pretty much the whole time we have been on the island. He has also been putting his priorities such as hunting and finding meat over the needs of the whole group. Like the time he let the signal fire go out because he was hunting. While the fire was out a ship sailed by but never saw smoke from the island.
Jack has also been testing my power and bravery. He challenged me to walk up the mountain and hunt the beast with him in the middle of the night. When we found the beast we both took off running in fear. When we got back Jack called a meeting told everyone that I was a coward and that I ran from the beast, but neglected to mention that he was also running. Jack also tried to get me kicked out of my position as leader, but his attempt failed miserably. Now jack is trying to bribe people in to joining his own separate tribe.
