Mario Benedetti: Literature’s Dedicated Soul

Born in Uruguay, Benedetti had survived the period of military dictatorship in Uruguay when he was living in exile between 1973 to 1985. During his life span he had been awarded with “Honoris Causa doctorates” and “Universidad de Valladolid”.

Literature lost one of its favorite loyal servants in the name of Mario Benedetti, full name, Mario Orlando Hamlet Hardy Brenno Benedetti Farugia on 17th, May 2009. Born on 14th, September, 1920 Mario Benedetti passed at the age of 89 leaving behind his name as a famous poet, novelist and journalist.

His works has been appraised world wide and also used in movies like “The Dark Side of the Heart”.

He was suffering from respiratory and intestinal problems since one year and died in Montevideo o 17th May 2009.

Though praised for most of his work, Mario had not been known so well in English category of literature and has always been known in the world of Spanish literature.
