Of Mice and Men
True companionship during the Great Depression that is hard to find.
True friendship can also be illustrated in Of Mice and Men. The title of the story, of mice and man depicts a mouse building a nest, just to be destroyed by the farmer. The story describes about trials and tribulations of a true friendship between George and Lennie. Even though Lennie brings a lot of trouble in George’s life, he never leaves Lennie behind because Lennie’s innocence proves to him that he is the only friend that he can trust and be a good company. With the hope of having a ranch of their own, together they work hard and in the end, the dream could not be fulfilled because of the incident where Curley’s wife was killed unwittingly by Lennie. Just like how the dog is killed, George shoots Lennie from the back of his head so that he would not know he is going to die and he will die quick without long pain.
At first, the act of shooting Lennie is very cruel and inhuman. However, that is the best thing to do. George has to sacrifice his friendship so that Lennie will not suffer from being tortured to death by Curley. This friendship is said hardly ever found especially in America in 1930s during the Great Depression. However, in my humble opinion, until now, true friendship, is even harder to find. Looking at the setting, it is obviously seen that the Great Depression is miserable. But nowadays, even we are not in economical crisis, true friendship still is hardly to be found. Most people become friends because they meet by chance, have to be friends, and some even befriend people for benefits. In short, most people nowadays are selfish. Compared to husband and wife relationship or other typical friendship, the closeness of friendship between George and Lennie are far better and closer.
