Richard III: Story Plot
About the famous Richard III by Shakespeare.
King Edward and his kingdom was sick but not in that kind of way. Instead, ‘family hated family’ and ‘brother hated brother’. Also ‘no one hated more venomously than Richard Duke of Gloucester’ and ‘the world and his brother the king.’ (Basically everyone had no respect for each other so they didn’t care about one another.)
Richard wanted to be king but he had to deal with others from his own family were in his way so he had to deal with them. Richard meets a man who is imprisoned. He asks him way and replies back “a wizard told him by ‘G’ his issue disinherited should be. And for my name George begins with ‘G’ it follows in his thoughts that I am he.” This means that a wizard came along and said someone whose name begins with G is the person who shouldn’t be the king so this persons name is George so the king thinks that he is the person that the wizard is talking about. And Richard says at the end “‘your imprisonment shall not be long’” which is a plain lie as he is glad that one member of the family is out of the way.
Richard wanted to marry Warwick’s youngest daughter although he killed her brother and father. He asks to be in her bed chamber but Anne (Warwick’s youngest daughter) spits in his face and replies “Out of my sight”. Richard finally persuades her to marry him but he plans not to have her long.
He cannot let the king live so he has a devious plan. He sends to men to kill his brother in his bed. He thinks his brother loves him but the men break the news, tell him that his brother sent him and killed him.
The only thing left now between Richard and the throne was the two little princes. The queen was so frightened that she sent her brothers to Ludlow to guard them before it was too late. ‘But Richard had a clever friend, the Duke of Buckingham. The duke tells him that they are going to Ludlow so off Richard goes. The priests want to keep the children in sanctuary but Richard tells them they have to live in the tower. The children do not like the tower but they still stay there. Sir William Catesby another friend of Richard was sent at night to kill the princes.
Lord Hastings was invited to the tower. Richard shows him a mark which he ‘says’ is the witchcraft or Edward’s wife. Hastings mentions an ‘if’ so Richard says “off with his head.”
Richard is now king and everyone thinks he is worthy of being the new king but there are 3 women who stood by the tower. The king’s unhappy wife: Anne, the Queen: mother of the two little princes and his own mother. He tells Catesby (his slave) to tell the public that his wife Anne is very ill and likely to die. Richard needs a better queen so he decides to marry Elizabeth, Edwards’s daughter so now Anne his out of the way, he can do that.
He gets bad news. Ely has fled to claim Elizabeth and the crown and Richard wants him dead.
Some good news for Richard has come. The duke of Buckingham’s army has been scattered but the best is that they have captured the duke.
Richard sends his army to fight the duke of Buckingham but as he goes, he sees the spirit of his mother warning him about a bloody beginning and a bloody end.
He gave orders for the duke of Buckingham to be executed and now he was ready for battle on Bosworth Field.
When he goes to sleep, he has a dream of all the people giving him warnings and keep on saying ‘despair and die’. Also they all say think on me tomorrow in the battle and their own messages.
Tomorrow in the battle he kills a lot of people but an archer kills his horse. He kills the fifth Richmond but wonders where he is but then he runs up with his horse and chops off Richard’s head.
