Romeo & Juliet: Who is to Blame?

Essay on Romeo and Juliet.

In every situation, someone gets blamed for it. Blaming other people for our own problems is part of human nature. In Romeo and Juliet, I believe the cause of all the tragedy was Romeo’s fault. I think he should take the blame for this situation. You cant truly be in love with someone just by seeing their outward appearance. Romeo wasn’t in love at all, he was infatuated. I also believe Romeo was a selfish person, considering that he wasn’t thinking about the harm it would bring to Juliet or both of their families. If he really loved her like he said he did, he wouldn’t have put her in danger like he did. The old saying, ‘If you really love her, you must let her go’ is very true with Romeo. He was just being selfish and only cared about what he wanted at the moment and was going to do anything he could to get it. Selfishness and infatuated are two very bad qualities that can destroy you and everyone around you. Because of Romeo’s actions, he caused five other people to die and then himself to die. Romeo was so infatuated with Juliet he couldn’t think straight. Romeo being truly in love with Juliet doesn’t make sense. Just because you think someone is good looking doesn’t mean your in love. Love is a strong and deep thing. In the dictionary it says love is (1) a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person, and (2) a deep and enduring emotional regard usually for another person. Just by looking at someone you cant have a profoundly tender, passionate affection, or a deep and enduring emotional regard. An example of his infatuation with Juliet and selfishness is when he comes into the tomb and sees her dead. The first thing he says is, ‘O my love, my wife! Death, that hath sucked the honey of thy breath, Hath had no power yet upon thy beauty.’ He still only cared about her appearance. He didn’t have any remorse for what he had done or anything! ‘It is the east, and Juliet is the sun. Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon, who is already sick and pale with grief, that thou, her maid, art far more fair than she. Be not her maid since she is envious. Her vestal livery is but sick and green, and none but fools do wear it. Cast it off! It is my lady.’ In these lines Romeo is saying what he really wants from Juliet, and what he wants is not called love. Not once did he talk about why he loved her other than her looks. Not once did he mention anything about her personality. Like I said before, If Romeo really loved her, he would have let her go. If anyone is to be blamed for everything that happened, it would be Romeo hands down! His selfishness and infatuation cost him his life, and not only effected himself, but a lot of people around him.
