This is a definition from dictionary.com of society.  My definition is somewhat the same. To have a society you need to have complex rules, an established government, a leader and an organization of jobs. In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the boys are stranded on an island. They try to create a society, mostly self consciously but you needed to live and have basics needs to create a society. I do not agree that they had actually made a society.

The construction of a leader is the biggest thing in a society, somebody to make the rules and to tell everyone what to do. In the novel, the boys did this part great. Ralph called all the boys with the conch. As the boys agreed he should be the leader. Now being the leader, he must be smart and brave, all good traits somebody can have. Despite all of that the boys kept changing who they were loyal to Ralph, Jack and even Roger or Simon. I don’t think this is no reason to switch leaders so soon. In our government the majority of people vote for a leader. In 2004-2005 President Bush’s approving rating was in the low 90’s. Now his approval rating is in the low 30’s or high 20’s, but as much as many people want to switch presidents early. They must wait until the next election in January 20th 2008. This should be the same in the novel. The boys should not want to change there leader so soon even if they disagreed with something.

The organization of jobs in a society is another need. You need food and water to survive along with shelters and fire. In this novel they handed out jobs, hunting for food and making shelters to sleep in. They started with there jobs quite well but the boys kept wandering off. (pg51.) “When the meeting was over they would work for 5 minutes and then wander off or go hunting” This would need to be dealt with some kind of easy punishment or talked to by the leader about working before playing. They need to be told that to live this stuff needs to be done.

We need rules for to get order, to tell the boys when play time is play time and work time is work time. The boys did not setup any guide lines to follow. Now you might say there just boys. But the point here is they did not establish a society on this island.

There are many ways to fix all the mistakes these boys made on the island. For this reason society is very complex. Thousands of years ago people were coming up with all these ideas. Most of it is human beings’ personal needs. Its all just a complex puzzle and all its pieces fitting together.
