The Cask of Amontillado
Unfortunately people commit murders every day to get revenge for one thing or another. It may be for love, jealousy, hatred, or just plain pleasure.
The sad thing is that these deranged killers or murderers as you may want to call them are among us on a daily basis they maybe be our own friend, neighbor, or even a relative. According to Bureau of Justice Statistics 80 percent of murder victims knew their killer (US. Newswire). In “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe, Poe tells a horrifying story about a cruel vengeance amongst what appears to be two men that apparently knew each other. Fortunato, ironically meaning fortunate, did not know that his killer would use what he knew so much about to plan his death. Fortunato was a very good wine connoisseur and could tell good wines from bad ones. Sadly for Fortunato, unknowingly had his own killer in front of him. Fortunato some how has hurt Montresor for what he seeks revenge against Fortunato. Montresor, of whom we do not know how is related to Fortunato, plans the perfect crime against Fortunato and lures him into his death using reverse psychology.
For Instance, like many murderers Montresor needed something to make Fortunato to willingly go with him. Wittingly, Montresor knew that the perfect day to murder Fortunato was on the day of the carnival. Furthermore, he made Fortunato think that he had luckily ran into him at the carnival. He knew he would be an easy target due to Fortunato had been drinking and would be easily convinced. He was very nice and friendly to him as he spoke with him. He loved the idea that Fortunato was wearing a motley (a clown suit) which according to Montresor fitted him perfectly and upon meeting Fortunato he comments, “How remarkably well you are looking to-day (pg. 218).” Obviously he is saying one thing but really in his head meaning another.
