He likes to hunt but he wants to be rescued so he wants to keep the fire going so that there is smoke.

Jack is the adversary of the story. And all he wants is to hunt, so they have meat. He turns savage in the book. Ralph likes the adrenalin of the hunt but he knows that in order to be rescued they must keep the smoke going.

Ralph fights with hat is right we they realizes that Simon is dead and the hunters murder him and even more when piggy is dead. Ralph doesn’t know what to do because jack and his hunters are hunting him.

Ralph is the only one that is not savage, he has to hide, and run so he doesn’t end up dead in this chaos.  He can’t make up his mind because he is so confused. He doesn’t know how to get out of ending up dead.

In the end they get rescued because the set the island on fire, and a boat comes. Ralph was lucky that they came because he would not have survived
