The Odysseus: My Life Lesson
After reading the Odyssey, I was compelled to write a life lesson for it. There are so many great things to be learned from this book, but perseverance was the most important to me.
Perseverance was a crucial aspect of Odysseus’ twenty-year adventure. Without dedication, he would have given up and not have made it home. Many times, Odysseus could see the beach of Ithaca. He has gotten so close to reaching his family and home but was swept off track by a disaster. Odysseus even entertains the thought to “leap over the side and drown at once” (Fagles 232). Eventually, with a lot of determination Odysseus makes it home to Ithaca. While he was gone, Penelope and Telemachus also need to stay steadfast. During the twenty years Penelope’s husband was gone, she and Telemachus both remained loyal to him even with the suitors badgering Penelope to marry one of them. Throughout the entire book, Odysseus and his family must all have perseverance in order for Odysseus to make it back to Ithaca safely.
In everybody’s life, there are numerous times where we have to persevere. This is a vital trait for any successful person. Without it, we could not accomplish anything great. In school, I have to work hard to get good grades. Though it may seem easier to give up and not study, it will be worth it in the end. Perseverance is not only something that Odysseus needed to get home, but it is something all of us should have in order to succeed in life.
