The book Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, is about Greasers and Socs. The Greasers in this book are a group of teen boys struggling to survive. The Socs are high class rich kids. The author was trying to show that when you fight it doesn’t solve anything. My reaction to this book was that it was sad people died from all this fighting.

Randy said in chapter 7,” It doesn’t do any good, the fighting and the killing. It doesn’t prove a thing. We’ll forget it if you win, or if you don’t. Greasers will still be Greasers and Socs will still be Socs.”

The setting of this book is in the late 1950’s in a small town. There was a lot of action in this book, from fighting other gangs to saving children from a burning church. The main Greaser characters are Ponyboy Curtis, Darry Curtis, Sodapop Curtis, Two-Bit Mathews, Steve Randle, Dallas Winston, and Johnny Cade. The main Soc characters are Cherry Valance, Marcia, Randy Adderson, and Bob Sheldon.

In this book, the first thing that happens is that Ponyboy was walking home and then he got jumped by socs. The next day Pony, Johnny, and Dally went to a drive in movie. Pony and Johnny meet Cherry and Marcia and Ponyboy realizes that Socs and Greasers have a lot in common. Ponyboy ends up arriving late back to his house and Darry gets very angry with him. Darry slapped Ponyboy out of frustration. Ponyboy ran to Johnny where they later get jumped by Socs. Johnny got scared that they were going to drown Pony and killed Bob who was one of the Socs. Dally helps them run to a church to survive in. The church ends up burning up and they rescue children that were in there. Darry, Ponyboy, and Sodapop reunited each other again at the hospital. Darry apologized for what he did and they go home. The Greasers and Socs have the big fight and the Socs end up running away. Johnny dies which gets Dally upset. He gets into trouble and then raises a gun that isn’t even loaded towards the cops. The cops then shoot him to death. Ponyboy realizes that there is good in the world and he decided not to fight anymore. He then does a paper that will bring up his grade because it had been slipping during all the drama. He writes the paper about his life and all the things that had happened.
