To Build a Fire

About Jack London’s “To Build a Fire”., naturalism and how the environment plays with it.

Jack London’s “To Build a Fire” shows naturalism through the environment, making  the Man have to go through harsh winter conditions throughout the story. At first,  the cold didn’t faze him at all even though he was a newcomer to this region. This is  symbolic because even though he thought the cold was nothing, he was no match for the  environment. The Man was doomed from the beginning because he cannot control the environment and all its crazy conditions.  The cold would have affected him sooner or later. When the Man realizes he has frostbite and starts to go crazy, he tries to run to keep what’s left of his body heat alive. This failed because he could not beat the environment, he was dead from the moment he decided to venture alone.
