Crime and Punishment Analysis
A good analysis of te novel Crime and Punishment.
Both Zamyotov and Zossimov are described as fops. And they are very good at dressing themselves. They are similar because they both belong to the upper class of society. Luzhin’s physical description is very similar to both of these men because of the fact that all three are in the same class in society. The description of Raskolnikov and Razumikhin are very different because they are both in the lower class in society. Instead of dressing in fancy clothes, they have to dress in rags and second hand clothes. His attitude towards clothes is that clothes are not of importance because they do not characterize the person wearing them which is the opposite view that Zossimov has.
Razhumikhin believes that the police are going about the whole murder business wrong. He thinks that they are following every little lead that they get just because they have no other ideas. They are blundering along blindly and he thinks they don’t know what they are doing. Zossimov thinks that the police are right in whatever they do because they are an authority figure and they should be trusted in whatever they do. His view is the complete opposite of that of Razhumikhin.
The thing that bothers Razumikhin the most about Luzhin’s theorizing is that he thinks Luzhin has no idea what he is talking about and is only going along with what other people had said and isn’t trying to come up with his own ideas. He thinks that he is being lazy and that he doesn’t know anything. It bothers him because he thinks every man should be able to think for himself and not have to resort to using another person’s ideas.
Luzhin and Razumikhin are different in their ways of philosophizing because they don’t have the same opinions. Luzhin thinks that money and success is the only determining factor for how successful a person is and their character. Razumikhin thinks that a person determines their own character by their own actions towards another person not by how much money they make. They don’t have any overlap between them.
There are several social issues that are the same in St. Petersburg that we still face today in our current day. These are that of human issues such as equal opportunities for both men and women. Also there are many different aspects of political perspectives that we face today such as our police system and how they go about the investigation of crimes and how they convict a suspected person of the crime.
