Fate and Destiny of Oedipus The King

Fate and Destiny of Oedipus the King.

Oedipus’ fate was foreseen by the gods Zeus and Apollo in Delphi. Zeus being the highest Olympian duty and father of Apollo, Delphi is the shrine where the oracle of Apollo held fourth. Oedipus biological parents took Oedipus to see the gods to see what fate held for their son. The infants’ fate was foreseen and told to his parents; they decided they would abandon their son and his doomed fate and break the cycle of his destiny.

Later as Oedipus was adopted by another set of royalty, not aware of what fate had in store for him; because those who knew didn’t tell for fear helping destiny being fulfilled. As an adult ironically Oedipus becomes king, and tries solving the murder of the kind before him. As he investigates the death of the prior king his known fate becomes apparent. As Oedipus’ fate is unveiled his destiny becomes sealed, all by the ones kept it all silent from him.

The gods foresaw Oedipus killing his father, he did the king before him was his biological father that left him for dead, alone, and shackled. The gods foresaw Oedipus marring his mother and bearing children with her. He did this too; not knowing the woman that he laid beside was his own biological mother who too left him for dead, alone, and shackled. As his mother hears of the truth and that the dreaded prophecy came true she commits suicide in her chambers. She couldn’t bare the truth, that the man she married and had children with was her own son. As Oedipus reveals more of his fate and learns the truth he in turn gouges out his own eyes. He does this because he too can not bare the truth and seeing the children is evidence of his fate. He then requests, no orders that he be banished from the kingdom. Those ordered obeyed.

Oedipus’ fate was foreseen and foretold, but could have been kept from being his destiny. If he would have know what prophecy the gods saw for him, all that was would not been. He should have known of his biological parents, he should have been told of part fate played in his destiny. Only those around him knew the truth, those around him were responsible for sealing his destiny with their silence, which was sealed later by some death, blindness and abolishment.
