Gothic Fiction

About the elements and characteristics of Gothic fiction.

The genre of literature called Gothic fiction, is a type of fiction that uses both horror and romance in the writing. Gothic fiction uses both psychological and physical horror and most writing has many foremost horror characteristics such as: abnormal events, ghosts, haunted houses, gothic themes, death, curses and a number of other characteristics that many gothic fiction writing has. This type of terror has a different effect on the reader as it also involves a romantic element. The literature shows a delight to the human’s emotions such as the buzz of unease and the pursuit of the story. English literature often portrays the gothic/medieval period as a horrifying and scary time, due to the laws that where enforced in those times and the mysterious happenings. Gothic fiction generates emphasis on the atmosphere of the story and is almost always set in the past. Today the Gothic Fiction genre is losing popularity, but that said it was created and inspired many other genres.
