Police Say Attack on Man’s Face Left Him Down to Bone as Online Pictures Show

The weekend attack of a man who had his face eaten by another man is being called "one of the goriest crimes" in the history of Miami by police. Miami police released new information today about the condition that the 65 year-old homeless man was left in by his attacker. This disturbing story is not for anyone with a weak stomach.

The incident happened on an off-ramp coming from a Miami highway and was reported by a witness who happened upon this gory scene. Rudy Eugene was naked and laying on top of Ronald Poppo, ripping Poppo’s face to shreds with his teeth. The witness ran and got a nearby police officer. The pictures of the victim and thecrime scene aftermath can be seen here on SMSEO. The officer could not get Eugene to stop chewing on this man’s face. After the officer ordered him away from the victim, Eugenelooked up with pieces of human flesh hanging from his mouth andgrowled at the cop. The first shot fired by the cop was non-fatal and meant to get Eugene to backoff his victim. This didn’t work as he still continued tearing into this man’s face with his teeth.

The officer was left with no other choice but to shoot Eugene numerous times to get him to stop this cannibalistic act on the victim. He died from the gunshot wounds. This is when the police were able to get their first close-up look at the victim.

The president of the Miami Fraternal Order of Police described Poppo’s condition afterhe was attacked, according to USA Today . “He had his face eaten down to his goatee. The forehead was just bone. No nose,no mouth,” said Sgt Armando Aguilar. This would tend to validate the online pictures posted, which show just what Aguilar is describing.

Aguilar told reporters that in his opinion the victim just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. This is the only reason anyone has right now for Poppo to be viciously attacked with his face chewed into pieces by Eugene. The vice president of the Fraternal Order of Police for Miami, Sgt. Javier Ortiz said, “It was not only grotesque, it was very sad, the amount of blood. It was very sad to see what happened to this gentleman that had his face eaten.”

The officer who shot Eugene had trained with the police crisis intervention team and he knew how to deal with the mentally ill. He had no choice but to shoot Eugene to get him away from thevictim. Ortiz said the officer is”clearly shaken up” and was administratively re-assigned pending the investigation, which isstandard after and officer-involved shooting.
