One character in the play Antigone that reveals something about values and issues of the human condition is Antigone. Antigone is one of the most kindhearted people in the play. She was brave enough to stick by her actions and not back down. Antigone is also a person that believes in equality.
When the two brothers waged war on each other for the throne, they both suffered a horrible fate. When Creon became the new king he declared the that only one of the two brothers would be buried. Polynices was left unburied to rot. Antigone could not stand for this. On her own will, she went against the king’s orders and buried the corpse. She felt that both of the brothers deserved an equal burial. Since she went against the king’s orders she was sentenced to be buried alive in a cave. She was given a small amount of food so she could live a while longer. In the end she ended up taking her own life by hanging herself.
Antigone’s actions revolves around one of the theme topics in the play, love. The love that Antigone had for her brother led to her death. She cared for her brother, Polynices, even though he was a traitor. Antigone asked her sister, Ismene, to help her bury the body, but she denied. Ismene feared the consequences that would occur if she went against the king’s orders. When Ismene found out that her sister was to be sentence4d to death, she said that she helped Antigone bury the body even though she did not. Ismene told this lie because she did not want to be left alone. Antigone told everyone that Ismene did not help her out and that she had nothing to do with it. Antigone did not want anyone taking the blame for her actions. She was proud of what she did. Pride is another one of the theme topics in the play. Antigone had too much pride in her actions, that is one of the reasons why she did not plead for forgiveness.
