Book Talk

Book talk about Eldest by Christopher Paolini.

The themes of Eldest are action, suspense, and like many fantasy books contain the battle between good and evil. It’s about a war. There are many fighting scenes. One of the most exhilarating ones is when Eragon fights Mortagar. However, this time they both have dragons. Eragon was fighting with his dragon Saphira at sea. Then they see a dragon coming from the clouds. They start fighting for awhile then Eragon gets stunned when he realizes it is Mortagar. Eragon is already tired and sore from the battle he was fighting just before, but he must keep fighting. There is suspense in this book too. Throughout the beginning there are many mysteries from the first book that aren’t answered. Then it seems like they slowly get to an answer just to find another mystery. It makes you keep on turning pages. The good and evil in this book is very intriguing. The empire which is the evil side mages to get some of the rebellion (the good side) and convert them to the evil side. It’s a classic theme that makes this book even greater than it already is.

The main character in my book is Eragon. He was formerly a farmer until he got drafted into one of the greatest wars that will ever be fought in his nation. He was a good farmer. He grew good crops. He also hunted. He still uses his hunting techniques to help him in any battles he encounters. With the help of his precise aiming and sharp sense it makes him a very well skilled soldier. He is also very agile. He can do many bone breaking tasks without even trying thanks to his new gained strength from his dragon Saphira. He is very strong willed and doesn’t quit at whatever his task is. He keeps on trying and if he fails repeatedly he will train until he overcomes whatever it was he couldn’t do. He is also clever, stealthy, and strong. HE can outsmart many of his enemies but he is not that well to outsmart his greatest opponents. His strength is also helpful when he fights.

He king of reminds me of my cousin Luigi. They are both very strong. My cousin is also extremely smart. My cousin is very similar to Eragon. They are both very well in ways of thinking too. They both look deep into things and can realize answers instantly that would take others a long time to realize. In summary, this is how they are both similar.

This book takes place in a time of magic, power, dragons, and war. Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, have just saved won a battle against King Galbatorix, cruel ruler of the Empire. The Empire is a very brutal place. Now Eragon must travel to Ellesmera, land of the elves, for further training in the skills of the Dragon Rider: magic and swordsmanship. So they (Eragon and Saphira) take off as soon as they can. Soon he is on the journey of a lifetime; his eyes open to awe-inspiring new places and people, his days filled with fresh adventure. But chaos and betrayal plague him at every turn, and nothing is what it seems. Before long, Eragon doesn’t know whom he can trust. Meanwhile, his cousin Roran is fighting a battle that might put Eragon in even worse danger. Will the king kill the last force of good? Eragon may not escape with even his life. If he’s that lucky . . .

This book reminds me of myself. My life. In the book many challenges are faced. Like my everyday life. Maybe my challenges aren’t as great as those but still. In the book there is treason. Just a few weeks ago a best friend that was like a brother to me betrayed me as well. We got into a fight over a soccer game. He broke a window and he blamed it on me. Everyone believed him. For a few days after that he also kept on using me as a scape goat and blamed everything on me. I got into a lot of trouble and we eventually got into a fight. This is kind of what happened between Mortagar and Eragon. I also have a pet that I am very attached to. His name is Khoda. Eragon has Saphira and I have Khoda. They’re not that well related (dragon and dog). However the basic idea is that we both have strong attachments to animals.

“He, who stands like a pillar, looses a battle. He who moves like a reed is triumphant.” (Pg 234)

This quote to me means that you have to constantly adapt. If you stand still as in if you don’t change you will be left behind or perish. You can’t let surprises take you while you’re down you must quickly adapt to the situation and conquer your obstacles. You must always stay alert and keep improving and most importantly not stand still which means to not stay the same and always move which means to get better and adapt.

I would really recommend this book. It is exciting and fun to read. It is really entertaining. I had a good time reading this novel. That is why I recommend it. It was thrilling. The experience of reading this is amazing. This book has such detail and so much of everything. It is simply a magnificent piece of writing. It is so great to have read this.
