Dragon Rider: A Must-Read Fantasy Novel

Dragon Rider is a Fantasy-Adventure novel written by Cornelia Funke, a New York Times Bestseller. Here’s a little review I wrote about this amazing novel.

Dragon Rider is originally a German novel, but translated into many different languages. I read Dragon Rider in the English translation. Overall the book deserves two thumbs up for great story plot, very unique writing strategies and characterization. Dragon Rider is mainly about the dragons. Dragons used to roam the earth freely until humans came. The humans thought dragons were creatures of danger and misfortune. And so, they sought refuge to a huge mountain cave far from the humans. They were living peacefully and happily until they saw humans coming. Afraid of danger, Slatebeard (leader of the dragons) asked for Firedrake (a dragon) and Sorrel (a brownie; cat and human breed) to search for the fabled Rim of Heaven. It is said that dragons used to live there, and the Rim of Heaven was the place unreached by humans.

On their way they met a boy. The boy’s name is Ben. Firedrake interested in the boy invited him to come along on his journey. Sorrel not very interested in humans, stays her distance away from him. Dragons feed on moonlight, which makes flight easier by nightfall. The team crossed perilous mountains, scorching deserts, dangerous creatures of the deep and many other dangers. If I am to continue it would spoil to those who would love to read this book, so I am sorry that my little summary of this book ends here.

This book would interest children from ages of 10 and up. The other good thing in this book is it’s beautiful yet simple illustrations, also done by Cornelia Funke. The book is up to 523 pages, but don’t worry the pages contain not too many words. Cornelia Funke was included in the 2005 Time’s Magazine 100 most influential Men and Women. At first she wanted Dragon Rider to be a cartoon show, but then she finally realized that she was born to write, and that is when she started to write Dragon Rider.

I would really recommend this book to fantasy fans and dragon fans and all kinds of readers who likes to explore new kinds of books. I hope this was a good book review for you Readers, and I hope that you would be interested into this book

Thank You,
