Five Great Fantasy Books for Teen Girls

You go to the library, but nothing really seems to pop out at you, and once something does, you’re automatically disappointed. Here’s a list of some really great fantasy books I know of for the middle school and high school aged teens who are just sick of all the bad books.

  1. Trickster’s Choice by: Tamora Pierce is part of a quartet of books by Tamora Pierce (four series of books that all connect to each other in some way). Set in the mythical country of Tortall, Aly at age 16 is constantly nagged by her parents to find a husband or get a job. She only has one job in mind, working as a spy for her country – a dream passed down by her father who is the Head of the spy organization. But, her parents won’t have it and she decides to run away. When she does leave, though, she is captured by pirates that sell slaves in the local markets. She is eventually sold to the Balitang household. After a while of working for them, she is visited by the god Kyprioth – a trickster god. He makes a deal with her to look after the Balitangs for her freedom. This book is full of adventure and will keep you interested to the very last page.
  2. Magyk by: Angie Sage is about the interesting tale of Septimus Heap. The night he is born as the seventh son of the seventh son, the midwife curiously pronounces him dead. That evening Silas Heap, Septimus’ father, finds a small newborn girl with violet eyes bundled up in the snow. He takes her home with him and raises her as one of his own. But the mystery is, who is this girl and where is Septimus Heap? Is he really dead? This book is full of great comedy and is a definite page turner.
  3. Bras and Broomsticks by: Sarah Mlynowski is a hilarious book that’s as much realistic fiction as it is fantasy. At 14, Rachel wishes for many things – to be accepted in high school, for that certain boy to like her, and for her evil step mom to just not even exist. If only she could just snap her fingers and get what she wanted. Imagine her jealousy when she finds out that her little sister, Miri, is a witch! Miri wants to use her powers for good – such as world peace, while Rachel would rather know how to dance better. With her sisterly power, she gets Miri to help her out – but will everything turn out all right? I couldn’t put down this book and often I’d get caught for laughing out loud. It’s so much fun!
  4. Twilight by: Stephenie Meyer. Chances are, you’ve heard of this book – if not then I definitely suggest picking it up. Bella Swan lived with her mother in Arizona most of her life, but in Junior year of high school she chose to move to Forks, Washington to live with Charlie (her dad) and go to school there. At her school, she meets a devastatingly handsome boy named Edward who has captured her attention. But, she’s not so sure if Edward is even human. The tale of Romeo and Juliet has been spiced up with the concepts of high school and vampires. This is definitely a page turner and will make you fall in love with Edward just like Bella has.
  5. The Amulet of Samarkand by: Jonathan Stroud is the story of Nathaniel, a magician’s apprentice who has been neglected for most of his life. One day, his master holds a gathering of magicians and there Nathaniel is attacked by the magician Simon Lovelace for talking back to him. After that day, he vows to get revenge on Lovelace. Studying behind his master’s back, Nathaniel gains the power to raise a powerful demon by the name of Bartimaeus to spy on Lovelace for him. Full of tongue and cheek humor, this book is extremely adventurous and a lot of fun.

These are all some really great books and hopefully this list helped you out for the next time you stop by the library, keep on reading!
