Halo The Fall of Reach – Chapter Summary

This book is a great for die hard fans who just loved the games and need more story. Those people should read the book themselves to get the full experience. For those who just want to know the story or are just to lazy to read I have put together a nice Chapter Summary. (Some Chapters are summarized in groups of 2 or 3 to save time) I wrote it as best I can so non-Halo fans could still understand it. Enjoy!

Chapter Summary

Prologue – 0500 Hours, Feb 12, 2535 The Prologue starts off with the Master Chief and his team of SPARTANs doing a mission which involves fighting the massive alien army which is the Covenant. After retreating from the battle Master Chief watches the planet Jericho VII get glassed by Covenant Battle Cruisers.

Chapter 1 to 2 – 0430 Hours, Aug 17, 2517 Lieutenant Junior Grade Jacob Keyes and a renowned female scientist, Dr.Halsey, take a small spaceship to the planet Eridanus 2 to study and eventually abduct a 6 year old boy named John.

Chapter 3 – 2300 Hours, Sep 23, 2517 John and 74 other kids were abducted and taken to planet Reach, a highly defended military HQ, and were told they were to be conscripted into the UNSC’s SPARTAN II Project designed to quell the rebellions among the UNSC’s territory.

Chapter 4 to 5 – 0530 Hours, Sep 34, 2517 For several years the seventy-five SPARTANs were put through grueling military training and college level education that taught them physical endurance, tactical strategy, and teamwork through the help of Chief Petty Officer Mendez and his rigorous training exercises and tests.

Chapter 6 to 7 – 1130 Hours, Mar 09, 2525 John, now the new team leader for showing great leadership skills, and the other SPARTANs went under surgery and were bio-engineered to have super human characteristics. Which include super strength, near indestructible bone structure, lightning quick speed, and enhanced senses but only thirty-three SPARTANSs survive the harsh augmentations. Others either die or were mutated in such a way that they are no longer battle ready.

Chapter 8 to 10 – 0930 Hours, Sep 11, 2525 John and SPARTANs Sam, Kelly, Linda, and Fred went on a mission in the Eridanus System to infiltrate a rebel base and kidnap the rebel leader colonel Robert Watts to hinder the rebels progress. They complete the mission with no casualties.

Chapter 11 – 0600 Hours, Nov 2, 2525 The SPARTAN’s training is nearly complete and Mendez is leaving them to go train the next set of SPARTANs but a new threat emerges as a violent highly advanced alien faction called the Covenant have attacked and glassed the planet Harvest.

Chapter 12 to 13 – 1750 Hours, Nov 27, 2525 Because of the new threat Dr.Halsey sped the SPARTANs up to phase MJOLNIR, the final step of the SPARTANs’ training. Which was to outfit them with high tech battle suits that protect them in firefights and enhance their already superhuman characteristics; all the while Captain Wallace is fighting off a Covenant ship in nearby space to buy them time to suit up.

Chapter 14 – 2037 Hours, Nov 27, 2525 John and a couple of his teammates go EVA, with their new armor, and infiltrate the lone Covenant ship that is giving Captain Wallace such a hard time and destroy it from the inside but at the cost of one of his teammates, Sam. Also John is promoted to Master Chief Petty Officer for his success.

Chapter 15 – 0000 Hours, July 17, 2552 Ensign William Lovell, a second lieutenant, was stationed in the Sigma Octanus star system on the lookout for rebels and more importantly the Covenant. An unusual UFO passed by his station but Lovell just shrugged it off and guessed it was a large asteroid. It was actually a Covenant fleet moving in for an attack.

 Chapter 16 to 19 – 1300 Hours, July 17, 2552 The Covenant fleet that got past Ensign attacks Sigma Octanus IV but with Commander Key’s tactical genius he repels the attack. He is promoted to Captain for his tactical genius. Unfortunately Covenant troop carriers got by and invaded the planet and the UNCS’s marines were fighting a losing ground battle.

Chapter 20 to 23 – 1800 Hours, Jul 18, 2552 Master Chief and his SPARTANs were sent down to Sigma Octanus IV to sneak into the now Covenant occupied city of Côte d’Azur. When they arrive they discover 2 new species that are among the Covenants ranks, recover an ancient encrypted stone artifact the Covenant dug up, and destroy the city and it’s alien occupants with a HAVOK tactical nuke.

Chapter 24 to 26 – 1100 Hours, Aug 12, 2552 All but a couple of the remaining SPARTANs were gathered at the planet reach to receive an upgraded version of the MJOLNIR suits, which now had Covenant inspired high tech energy shields, and were briefed of a mission to go kidnap the Covenant leaders called the prophets.

Chapter 27 – 0600 Hours, Aug 29, 2552 Master Chief was also given an AI called Cortana which would provide tactical information, technical support, and battle calculations that would all come in handy for the mission he was supposed take place in.

Chapter 28 to 29 – 0600 Hours, Aug 30, 2552 The SPARTANs go aboard the Pillar of Autumn, a cruiser specially outfitted for the mission that was being piloted by Captain Keyes and were about to leave for the mission but get the news that Reach was under attack.

Chapter 30 to 31 – 0000 Hours, Aug 39, 2552 Chief Petty Officer McRobb and his crew were in the Fermoin Space Station when the Covenant attack Reach and with fear of being captured and the navigation coordinates of Earth at risk, McRobb self destructs the whole station; hiding Earth from the Covenant at the cost of his crew and own life.

Chapter 32 – 0519 Hours, August 30, 2552 Back at Reach, little over 100 UNSC ships prepared for the alien fleet of over 300 superior vessels to attack. The only advantage the UNSC had were several MAC orbital guns positioned around reach.

Chapter 33 to 34 – 0535 Hours, August 30, 2552 The epic battle for reach began and at the end both sides endure heavy losses. Even though Covenant outnumbered the 30 UNSC remaining ships the Covenant retreat and the UNSC find out the battle was merely a distraction for a massive ground assault on Reach and to capture one of the UNCS’s ships, The Circumference, to extract all of its Navigation coordinates, Including Earth.

Chapter 35 – 0616 Hours, August 30, 2552 All the SPARTANs, except for a few, were sent to Reach to try and halt the advancing Covenant ground force. Master Chief and Spartans Linda and James were sent to infiltrate the Covenant carrier that had captured The Circumference.

Chapter 36 – 1616 Hours, August 30, 2552 Master Chief had infiltrated the carrier and destroyed all navigation data so Earth could not be found but Linda and James were both killed during the mission. The troops on the ground were all over run and planet Reach had fallen. Master Chief went back aboard the Pillar of Autumn and it retreated via slip space jumping to a random coordinate that Cortana generated.

Epilogue – 0647 Hours, August 30, 2552 The artifact that was found at Côte d’Azur had markings on them and Cortana deciphered them as star formations and jumped to the coordinates. When they arrived they found an mysterious ring world which would turn the tide of the war; it was called Halo.
