The Alchemist by Paul Coelho

This book was OK. I found it didn’t suit my age group but others may find it quite interesting.

The Alchemist is a very spiritualist book in which a young Shepard has a reoccurring dream in which he finds great treasures in the pyramids. One day he was travelling from village to village when he met a girl who he grew fond of and they started chatting. The same time next year he came again to speak to the girl who he had been waiting for. The got chatting and he started to talk about these dreams which he had been having and she suggested that he should go to the fortune-teller. The woman told him about his dreams and how to follow them, but she made him swear to give him a cut of the treasure if he found it, so he sold all his sheep and set off to the great pyramids of Egypt. The story then tells of the adventures that he had to take to arrive at the great pyramids. In the end he finds himself in a refugee camp near the pyramids and marries a woman that he finds and find his treasure and give a cut to the fortune-teller. The story talks about all the mirages and spiritual analogies of god trying to show him his destiny.

The book used a lot of spiritualist destiny style plots. Like the when they used the visions that he had in the desert where god was trying to tell him how to get to his destiny.

I didn’t really enjoy this book because it could be very boring at times and I didn’t think the story line was very good. This book would most suit ages from 21-40, not teenagers.
