Twilight Book Review and Recap 1

A brief overview of the beginning of the first book in the “Twilight” saga written by Stephenie Meyer.

Twilight is a romance about danger and constant and undying love between a vampire boy named Edward Cullen, and a human girl named Bella in high school. The first chapter begins to give insight into the everyday life of Bella as she is leaving Phoenix where she was living with her mother Renee and new step-father Phil. With Phil being a Minor League baseball player, the travel involved would leave her mother at home to ‘babysit’ her, and she knew this prospect would make Renee unhappy. So to remedy the situation, she decides to live with her father in Forks, Washington. Not only does she despise the idea of leaving her mother and friends, but Forks is one of the rainiest places in the United States.

Bella’s father is the chief of police in Forks, and therefore knows everyone and their business. With no time to get used to the new surroundings, she is thrown into her first day of school where she knows no one. Her only friend is an Indian boy who lives on the nearby reservation named Jacob, whose father Billy Black is best friends with her father. So beginning her first day, she meets a few people in class and at lunch meets the one who makes her heart skip beats and ache for the space between them to be less. Sitting across the room at a table with 4 others is Edward Cullen, one of the most coveted boys at the school, who everyone thinks is too vain to date anyone in this small town.

The Cullen’s are a family of “foster children” in the home of the town’s doctor, Carlisle Cullen and his wife Esme. The 4 other ‘children’ are made up of 2 couples: Alice and Jasper, and Rosalie and Emmett. Everyone fancies Dr. Cullen as a matchmaker with his adopted children, as the couples are open at school about their relationships. No one ever sits at their lunch table, and they always appear aloof, with no other friends but each other. Rich and gorgeous, the entire male Cullen family is sought by every teenage girl at the school. Bella’s new friend Jessica informs her of the relationship between the Cullen children and how odd it is that they live together under the pretense of siblings, but date one another. Seeking out the name of the one with no mate, she asks who Edward Cullen is.

Edward ‘hears’ Jessica answer Bella’s question and looks across the room to see her face when the answer comes. The beginning of the day was a bore, but now Bella has something to pay attention to. She tries to sneak peeks across the room at him when she thinks he’s not looking, only to find that he is staring at her. Lunch is over, and on to the next class she goes.
