What is The Attraction of Twilight?

A short article about Twilight and wondering why it attracts so many young girls.

First let me introduce my own experience with Twilight. I read the books about two years ago, when I saw a contest on MySpace for people to play each of the characters. I recognised Alex Evans who was chosen for Edward Cullen and because I had a bit of a crush on Alex at the time, wanted to find out what Twilight was. I discovered it was a book and took a risk in buying it on Amazon because I love reading and it sounded like a good story.

I fell in love with the story. It was so different from anything I had read before. That may just be me as my taste in novels tends to steer from Point Horrors to Meg Cabot chickflicks, and I haven’t read anything like this before. I thought the Edward and Bella love story was cute and adored Edward. I have to admit the way you picture Edward is influenced a lot by the people who suggest what he should look like, as I pictured him as Alex Evans for quite a while before creating my own version of him. I bought New Moon next, then Eclipse. I loved the series back then. I suggested it to all my friends, who soon became obsessed also.

Next I hear it’s becoming a movie. I get a little excited, but also a little dubious about how it would turn out. And I was very disappointed when I finally did see it. It ruined the book a little.

Suddenly every 12 year old girl became obsessed with Twilight. It seemed like people were only liking it for the sake of liking it. I have this tendency to love something for a couple of weeks to a month, and then hate it. I like change and there’s only a few things I’ll always have a love for. My love of Twilight last a few months longer but then disappeared. This may sound dumb, but when something is popular it becomes a bit of a turn off to me. Same with men, but that’s another story!

Stephenie Meyer is a good writer, I’ll give her that. It was a terrific story idea and was very successful for someone who never planned to become a writer… supposedly. But when Breaking Dawn came out…that did it for me. I was absolutely horrified how awful the fourth book was. I think it could be an okay novel by itself, but did not fit in well with the rest of the series. A lot of people would disagree with me, including a few of my friends. But I really didn’t like it. I felt as if reading it was a chore, but I needed to find out how it would end.

Why is it so many obsess over Twilight? Even some fans only talk about Team Edward or Team Jacob. I used to be Team Edward because I like the original characters better and felt as if Jacob was getting in the way, before eventually changing to Team Jasper. He was much cuter in the movie too! I even know of some people lying about reading the book, as to fit in with the trend. Now that’s getting a little pathetic, isn’t it?

Perhaps I’ll return to the series one day and re-read them for the tenth time…but for now, I am having a hard time liking the idea of Twilight and don’t think I’ll be able to force myself to see the movie of New Moon. But for all you original fans who still enjoy the series, have fun!
