Claymore Volume 1: Manga Review
A little review of humour for Claymore Volume 1, so enjoy the amusement ahead.
Claymore Manga Volume 1 Review: You had me with the swords!
How I got into it:
Read an Anime magazine, then read a review for the first few volumes and so decide (On impulse) to buy all the volumes available at the time (That being, while currently my shelf is happily stacked up with 14 volumes, since last year). I haven’t regretted it from personal enjoyment of the series developing at a nice pace and introducing more Claymore’s as it goes on…..sorry, well I brought them all as reading material for a holiday in Frances and well I got back three weeks later and brought all the new volumes available.
Story:
Imagine if they put “The Thing” in a more medieval setting….well if I said it was like that, it would be a mixed Trie (Trie: Definition: Easier way to explain something to someone while retaining a simple truthful explanation, that will give a false idea towards the actual thing itself).
The simple outline I can give you now (I hate revealing anything about the plot) as boy meets girl, girl kills boy’s family (Family being composed of Yoma instead of his family) boy gain respect for girl, girl wants boy to stay in the town, boy wants to still go with girl (For tail or Guro, I don’t know), girl still denies boy and finally boy convinces girl to let him go with her. I’ve now given you an outline of the story without revealing any plot elements.
Characters:
The character list here (As this is a review of the first volume) will only take the time to mention three of the characters, so enjoy the little write up for each.
Clare:
The kick ass main (Pretty much the main character from how little page time Rake gets in later volumes) character who needs only to glare at a Yoma to get a result in her awesome degree, at “Kick A Yoma Down High School for Silver Haired Girls” Also she wields a Claymore sword (I think the title might’ve been a hint).
As you can see, you never want to piss Clare off.
Raki:
He’s annoying for someone who lost his family and still seems completely content to travel with someone nearly (Or could be) six years older than him. The questions from this raised are “Is he hoping to score with the silver eyed chick?” or “Does he have some sort of sick fetish towards Guro at how many Yoma he’s seen Clare cut to shreds?” Well the answers to those two questions are as follows “Probably” and “More probably then the last”.
Shut up Wesley!…….no wait wrong series, right meaning.
Yoma:
As mentioned, they’re pretty much “The Thing” from “The Thing” except thrown into a medieval environment and does a much better job of not being found out (They don’t have the tried and tested blood test. Important notice: There’s no reason in the blood test, since a Yoma would pretty much rip you in three before you even have a chance to go “Give blood”). So yeah, basically Yoma devour someone inners and then take them over their form to hide.

Do not be alarmed! The Yoma are not furries. I repeat, the Yoma are not Furries! But try telling Clare that.
Artwork:
A very much feel of the 80’s comes to mind, with character designs both a delicate impression for the Clare and other Claymore’s (Who are all just turned 20 or under….no fat chicks or anyone pass the age of 30), so I like to use the term “Beauty is deadly” to describe the female character designs; while the male character designs have a sense of repeating themselves once you’ve read a few more volumes, but the first volumes presents itself quite nicely in terms of artwork and distinctive characters style.
Overall Experience:
My overall experience from reading Claymore is that I’ve read every volume released up to now and have no plans to stop buying the next.
I recommend this to anyone looking for a feel of the 80’s or if you totally dig chicks with huge swords.
Also I would like to mention with the “Yoma” I’m not sure if there’s a plural variation or if you use the term “Yoma” as a plural anyway.
Liked it
