Inside Track on The Thrilling District Nine (Neill Blomkamp, 2009)

Surely the saturated science-fiction arena doesn’t need another alien movie?! Wrong. Every genre needs original motion pictures and District nine certainly is one. Without spoilers I bring you an overview of a film which will stand out as one of 2009′.

Startling original science fiction film from Neill Blomkamp, backed by producer Peter Jackson, which explores the circumstances which would arise if a relatively primitive race of aliens were to make Earth their home. The ‘prawns’, as they are referred to (you will have to decide whether this is derogatory or not), arrive in Johannesburg, South Africa and are cordoned off by the relevant government agency in an area known as ‘District 9′. Though they are now officially inhabitants of their new city, many of the locals are unhappy with their presence.

It is somewhat of a role reversal to see Blacks South Africans protesting about another race living close by, so what we are dealing with here is apartheid and racism. The social commentary in this film is subtle and excellent. The aliens rights are constantly marginalised and they have basically become slaves to the system (join the club, eh). Things take an unexpected turn when a government agent, sent to enforce some new laws upon the alien race, finds himself in a spot of bother. What follows not only resembles a race to acquire arms but also a survival contest for humans and aliens. Filmed documentary-style ‘District 9′ is that rare event: an original science-fiction film with a heart and social commentary. There is currently an uproar concerning the depiction of Nigerians in the film’s text. They are not the first to be unhappy with their on-screen representation and certainly won’t be the last!
