Living and Loving

“We all need people who will love and support us.”

Dr. Viktor E. Frankl, author of the best seller, Man’s Search for Meaning, wrote:

A key to maintaining good health is being able to get emotional support from other people. You have to have good relations with your intimates. There are cases on record of people who were called hopeless, but they pulled through because their belief not only in themselves, but in the people who were aiding them.

Love can prevent or correct physical ailments. Physicians prove this in study after study. Cancer victims, for instance, who have survived for long periods of time were consistently vigorous, assertive, optimistic, and had a history of constructive social relationships. Among pregnant women, complications are nearly three times less likely in a high support group than in a low support group.

Support systems have been shown to reduce the amount of medication required and change the biochemistry of the immune system. On the other hand, those who feel abandoned and rejected often have to fight for their lives. Divorced individuals have twelve times the chance of contracting an illness during the year following a divorce than they normally would.

By realizing the value of positive relationships, we can come closer to controlling our health by involving ourselves with vital support networks.
