Moon Walk: Michael Jackson’s Autobiography
A review of Mike’s life.
Jackson was quite, a person, whose actions were timely. He knows that the more large a man becomes, the more complex history become; After some good recorded success between 1972 to 1987, The artiste ventured to write his own story – an autobiography. Within these period, he recorded his first single ‘Go to be there’ (1972); Off the wall’ (1979); ‘Thriller’ (1982); the highest selling album in history, ‘Bad’ (1987); that was his second largest selling album.
In 1988, he made, Michael Jackson: Moonwalker, a documentary on the making of music videos of the ‘Bad’ album. Then he published Moonwalk a book an autobiography, where Jackson told his story from cradle to stardom.
The book suffered few setbacks, before then, until it finally saw the light of day. It was edited by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, the former wife of the assassinated U.S president John F Kennedy and later, married Aristotle Onassis a Greek shipping magnet.
In the introduction, Jacqueline described Jackson’s personality with these words, ‘To many people, Michael Jackson seems an elusive personality, but to those who work with him, he is not’. This talented artiste is a sensitive man, warm, funny and full of insight. Michael’s book, Moonwalk provides a startling glimpse of the artiste at work and the artiste in reflection.
In chapter one of the book, it was a reminiscence on growing up days. ‘Just kids with a dream’. On the family music band. He wrote about his work relationship with his brothers. He worked out his entire mind for the success of the band.
Also, he wrote about his environment – the response of other kids to the family band. He said, (those kids) ‘who threw rocks at our windows while we rehearsed telling that we will never make it’.
Jackson, also wrote on ‘The Jackson 5’ road to fame when they joined the Motown Records in 1968, Motown promised and made three in row albums for the Jackson 5, which was a success; a success that made the group move to south California.
Jackson took the opportunity of this book to put some misconceived stories right. One of such was that Diana Ross brought Jackson 5 to Motown Records. This he said that Diana Ross came much later. He said, Jackson 5 won an amateur contest, Apollo Night competition, this lead to Motown’s invitation to the group for an audition.
Also, still on the Jackson 5 early days with Motown, on the road to fame, the Jackson kids lost touch with their peers, even opportunity for their education. They eventually settled for a home tutor.
Michael also absolved himself of any involvement with drug. He said, ‘’I myself have never even tried drugs, no marijuana, no cocaine, nothing I mean, I haven’t even tried these things, forget it. This isn’t to say we were never tempted. We were musicians doing business during an era when drug use was common. I don’t mean to be judgmental it’s not even a moral issue for me – but I have seen drugs destroy too many lives to think they are anything to fool with. I am certainly, not angel, and I may have my own bad habits, but drugs aren’t among them”.
On breaking from Motown, which he said, started in 1974, this lead to the group change of name from Jackson 5 to the ‘Jackson’, and the departure from the group, one of their kid brothers, Jermaine. At that time the group wanted a proper positioning in the music world which was not possible with the Motown Records.
Furthermore on distorted truths, Jackson, wrote about his relationship with Diana Ross which he said there was no acrimony, contrary to what had been speculated in the media. He said this about Ross, ‘I am crazy about her. She was my mother, my lover, and my sister all combined in one amazing person’. However he admitted a hurt on the news about her marriage to another man, because of his emotional attachment to her.
He wrote about his participation on ‘The wiz’ siege. His gained experience and meeting with Quincy Jones, which lead to more success in his music carrier.
Jackson disclosed that his first date was with actress Tatum O’ Neal. He really wanted this book touch both his professional and personal life. This, I believe he did to clear up much fog before his view.
Another fog he cleared was that he altered his image surgically. He said, he never touched his skin, cheeks, eyes, lips or any other, as generally believed he did, but, he only had his nose done.
Michael Jackson, Who never liked interviews, used this book to give the world his own side of his stories. I think he did. This book clears the unfair presentations of his personality in the media.
