Review of the Communist Manifesto

Communism is a form of government in which a single party controls state owned means of production with the professed aim of establishing a stateless society. InThe Communist Manifesto , by Marx and Engels, the authors establish communist ideas as truths and demonstrate why they are the keys to a successful society.

They explain the flaws of capitalism and show how their idea of government solves these problems. Through the publishing of their manifesto, Marx and Engels communicate the benefits of communism and draw backs of capitalism.

Marx and Engels start by developing the relationship between capitalist owners and laborers. According to Marx and Engels, laborers are forced into a life of little sustenance due to the greed of owners. This is because of industrialization, which has left laborers unvalued, because skilled jobs are being taken over by machines. When the laborers feel unvalued, they are not inspired to work hard, and productivity is minimized. This makes laborers receive little wealth, as it is shared by only a few, while the mass is underprivileged. Capitalism does not value all jobs the same. Many un-skilled factory workers have no chance for advancement, which leaves them with little money to provide for themselves. This is a drawback of capitalism. Marx and Engels then move on to the relationship between capitalists and communists. They start with how capitalists’ lives revolve around the ownership of property. Communists aim to abolish private property, which would remove status. The second problem with capitalists is wage labor. The communists believe that all jobs are equally important and all jobs should be paid the same. This third problem is in the family. Capitalists pay women less, and children are regarded as economic advantages. In communism, women hold equal status, given the same jobs and wage. Children are also not regarded as economic gains because they cannot work until they finish school. These contradictions make communism seem like the better choice as oppose to the economic driven capitalists.

This book is a manifesto, and therefore outlines goals to help the world. These goals are: Abolition of property in land and application of all rents of land to public progress, A heavy progressive or graduated income tax, abolition of all right of inheritance, confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels, Centralization of credit in the hands of the state, by means of a national bank with State capital and exclusive monopoly, Centralization of the means of communication and transport in the hands of the state, Extension of factories and instruments of production owned by the state; bringing into cultivation of wastelands, and the improvement of the soil generally in accordance with a common plan, Equal liability of all to labor. Establishment of industrial armies, especially for agriculture, Combination of agriculture with manufacturing industries; gradual abolition of the distinction between town and country by a more equable distribution of the population over the country, and Free education and abolition of children’s factory labor. These goals are the basis of communism. Marx and Engels clearly outlined these goals in their manifesto, which allowed for a clear understanding of the communist ideal.

Marx and Engels communicate the benefits of communism and draw backs of capitalism through the publishing of their manifesto. The clearly outline and explain their goals as well as including a compelling case for the change from capitalism to communism. Many of the communist goals are ideas that are used today, such as free education. Therefore, Marx and Engels accomplish their objective of explaining the goals and ideas of communism.
