Some examples of different styles of poetry.

Acrostic Poem

Definition

Acrostic poetry is when the first letter of each line spells a word, usually using the same words as in the title.

S- unny days,

P- retty flowers

R- abbits running really fast through my front yard

I- ncredible views

N- ice weather

G- reat days!

Clerihew

Definition

A clerihew is a comic verse consisting of two couplets and a specific rhyming scheme, usually aa,bb. It usually teases someone famous in a mild way.

Poem

Bush is funky

He looks like a monkey.

When our economy’s depressed

He just sits at his desk.

Haiku

Definition

A haiku (also called nature or seasonal haiku) is an unrhymed Japanese verse consisting of three unrhymed lines of five, seven, and five syllables (5, 7, 5) or 17 syllables in all. Haiku is usually written in the present tense and focuses on nature (seasons).

Winter snow is here

The days are quiet and still

With the wind howling

Epitaph

Definition

An epitaph is a brief poem inscribed on a tombstone praising a deceased person, usually with rhyming lines, such as aa, bb.

Poem

She was a grandmother I never will know

My mom told me she always made friends not foes

Lung cancer made her become dead

I just wish she could say something to me from her head.

Tongue Twister

Definition

Tongue twisters are made up of lines that are hard to say fast. In other words, the poem ties your tongue into knots.

Winter winds whizzing

Children crazily crashing

Through the trees

Sledders slyly slide skillfully

Freely for fun!
