Late Night in Tokyo

My poem Kabukicho, also known as Late Night in Tokyo was inspired by a beckoning cat in a shop window. A Maneki Niko or waving cat is very popular in Asia and you will often see them on the desk in banks and businesses.

Kabukicho

Maneki Niko in gaudy colours

beckons from her shop.

A red flower choker adorns her neck

and on it a little bell.

Right paw raised

she wishes all,

‘good fortune!’

In return the tourist

fills her up with gold.

My poem Kabukicho, also known as Late Night in Tokyo was inspired by a beckoning cat in a shop window. A Maneki Niko or waving cat is very popular in Asia and you will often see them on the desk in banks and businesses. They bring good fortune. There are several colours but the gold ones signify wealth.

(Japanese symbol for cat)

Kabukicho is the red light district in Tokyo, and it is here that our lady cat is beckoning the tourist into her brothel. She is a prostitute. She wears a choker and a bell suggesting domination. The tourist ‘fills her up with gold’ so she receives payment for her services.
