Peter Cubitt: Stratford Poet

Stratford-upon-Avon has produced two poets of note: William Shakespeare and Peter Cubitt.

As with Shakespeare Peter Cubitt writes not only about what he sees, but also what he smells and hears, about textures and colours, peoples and places – and his dog Polly – and not only in Warwickshire, but anywhere that takes his fancy, including motorways, derelict buildings, cathedrals, beaches, seas, especially the seas and beaches of France.

Peter’s poetry started out as performance poetry, in fact it still is performance poetry, but has now been fixed to the pages of his first book, Walking With Words, which was published last year, with a foreword by Harry Potter actor, David Bradley. But even when you read it you can hear the poet’s voice even if you’ve never seen Peter perform – the sound and the movement is there.

Now Shakespeare had to leave Stratford-upon-Avon for London to get recognition; but with Peter it’s been the other way round, creating a life in Stratford that has, over the last 20 years or more, included teaching, acting ( a lot of acting), service to the community, and a great deal of writing, writing that at last is gaining him recognition in many quarters.

Peter’s book, Walking With Words ( ISBN 978-0-9558699-2-1) can be ordered through Amazon.
