Criticizing the Memoirs or Love
Critically analyzing the memoirs of love by Dumbi Unabor.
The author of the book memories of love has done a great work in analyzing what it actually takes to love. The author also carefully assigned roles to the characters roles were properly performed. Memories of love is simply a story that one will mistake to be a true life story but it is just a (fictious) story with lots of examples and lessons that the readers can learn from.
As a critic to the work memories of love, I will like to define. What it means to criticizing a work of art to my honourable author Mr. Dumebi Unabor. On this note, criticizing a work of art simply implies to judge and appreciate a literary work of art simply implies to judge and appreciate a literary work in order to identify the good points and the errors or pit falls in the work. It also means to critically access a work of art from a position of authority. In this case, the critic should be able to comment on the them, scene, plot, setting and characteristics. He or she must be able to know the work thoroughly so as to have a good criticism of the work.
The Good Points in the Work
The story line in CHAPTER ONE, I will say as a critic that Juliet tried by really expressing her hole hearted love for Romeo by taking him to the hospital after the accident he encountered also she offset the money requested for the treatment of Romeo. It takes a sympathetic heart and one with true love to do that.
Another good point is in CHAPTER TWO. Juliet was able to disclose the up coming be arrangement Jones from her parents pressures, decisions and Mr. Jones world of luxury and wealth. In this case not many ladies will actually want to continue with someone like Romeo and his status or position they will rather want to accept Mr. Jones because of his wealth.
CHAPTER THREE has a good point that the old and young people in the society can learn from. This is in the role Mr. Philip played in the story, Mr. Philip portrayed to us that it is not good for us to oppress people with our position just as Mr. Kola did. Hence, Mr. Philip was able to confront Mr. Kola of his wrong and greedy attitude. This took Mr. Philip to the position Mr. Kola was heading.
The author has another good point in CHAPTER SIX which is Romeo’s hot love affair with Mildred. In this the author made us to understand that it is not good to rush love and to take people for granted. The author also stated in the story that it is good to have friend that can care in times of problems. This is in Juliet and Rebecca’s case when they shared their marital experiences together, encouraged and comforted each other. The author in his work was able to make our mind to be compassionate and caring to the less privileged i.e. using our resources to help the needy. This is gotten from CHAPTER SEVEN were Romeo wrote his WILL in Juliet’s name and then extended it to the Orphans, widows, widowers and the poor people. While CHAPTER EIGHT further urged is to forgive and express love to those we truly love. This is because Romeo forgave Juliet and love her again and extended the love to her parents.
In addition, Romeo was blessed by God, he became wealthy which is a reward on his part, Mr. Kola was jailed i.e. Nemesis caught up with him because of his greed and Mr. Jones died because of his non-chalant attitude and stubbornness to yield to medical advice.
Actually, these are good points that the author has exposed our knowledge to but there are some pit falls. The author of this great work of art has been able to prove to the readers that when love is given to the wrong person it can result to lots of pains and frustrations but the reverse is the case when love is given to the right person. Also, we were made to understand by the author that love is not laid not the foundation of wealth but on true love that is ready to abide by the rules go love. He as well made us to understand that it is good for the rich people to use their wealth to help the less privileged in the society. He further educated us that it is good to forgive in cases of heart break and disappointments and to reconcile and love again.
The Pit Falls or Errors in The Work
- Despite the fact the Juliet was between the devil and the deep blue sea, and from the fact that she never loved Mr. Jones in CHAPTER TWO, the qualities in Romeo that made her love to be unconditional for him should have been stated by the author and then compared to Mr. Jones qualities, because I don’t think Mr. Jones is a total bad man or write-off. There could have been some good qualities in Mr. Jones which she must have like ordinarily but certainly not for love because of her genuine love for Romeo. all though, the entire story at the end proved that Romeo never forgot Juliet, he still came back for her after all odds but am of the opinion that CHAPTER TWO should have ended by the author telling the readers that Romeo’s promise to Juliet “When he said he will not forget her”. Should have been properly emphasized rather than keeping the reader in suspense supposing he merely just responded by saying I promise…….and never stood by it at the end of the story. This is because issues like this happen everyday in the physical world, films and drama. Possibly, the author should have said for emphasis that Romeo held her close, looked straight into her eyes with the heart of a man and confessed that he will not forget her come what may.
Furthermore, CHAPTER TWO, should have narrated to the readers how Juliet finally married Mr. Jones instead of placing the readers in a guess work i.e for the readers to guess what happened next. This part would have started how Romeo felt when he saw his love tying the nuptial knot with Mr. Jones.
- A second error in the story is Mr. Jones’ action on Mr. Kola. In CHAPTER FOUR, the author only told us that Mr. Philip listened to the be patients is that he can make proper investigation and then report back to them. The author did not tell us how the investigation was done which made Mr. Fola to be sent to jail but the author stated that Mr. Jones accused Mr. Kola angrily of defrauding him and ruining the image of his factory, there are mere accusations Mr. Jones did not have any prove to the issue. Facts and figures as well ass proofs should have been stated i.e. Mr. Jones should have carried out thorough investigation before Mr. Kola’s arrest. I believe Mr. Jones used his position and money to arrest Mr. Kola no investigation was made he acted upon what he haeard from the staff in his factory. Also, Mr. Jones told Mr. Kola that they will see in court but the case was not tried in court because the author never stated directly that Mr. Jones took the case to court and the case was tried in which Mr. Kola was found wanting of certain allegations which led to his imprisonment. The author should have told the reader the reason why Mr. Jones said they will se in court. This is another pitfall in the story. All these errors emanated from CHAPTER FOUR.
- In CHAPTER SIX, the writer should have stated in the story that what transpirted between Mildred and Romeo or between Romeo and Mildred is infatuation. This aspect of the story is not properly emphasized because love at first is not true love due to the fact that it has not undergone the test of time. Frankly speaking, they were infatuated with each other. Also, the accident case in the same CHAPTER SIX was not clearly stated because not everybody will understand that an accident actually took place except a reader who properly comprehend the story.
Conclusively, the author tried in is work. The plot which means the sequential arrangement or logical presentation of the story, the SETTING i.e. the physical environment, time, place where the storyline revolves even the LANGUAGE which is the narrative format used by the author the narrate the story the (Diction) i.e. the choice of words used by the author were properly in place. Even the characters used by the author contributed in making the story interesting and captivating. Despite the fact htat sme of the story line were placed on suspense, repetition and not well explained by the writer, in all said and done, the author of this great work is worth appreciating for his potentials and initiatives in putting together this wonderful package the MEMORIES OF LOVE……..
