The last time I saw Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park, I was only ten years old; I was fascinated by the dinosaurs and looked up to the smart, competent children protagonists. A lot has changed in a decade. As a geology student, I am capable of looking at science fiction with a critical eye, recognizing factual discrepancies that Hollywood overlooks. As a college student, I have been trained to articulate complex ideas and struggle with moral and philosophical issues. Due to these more developed ways of thinking, the way I perceived my second viewing of Jurassic Park changed dramatically on two fronts—the first being that I now see the movie more as an adventure/fantasy film then science fiction, and the second being that I now understood the moral debate about what the scientists were doing.
