I received this book in the mail, and excitedly I delved into it, in anticipation of the good meal that I have come to expect from Joseph Spence Sr, the Epulaeryu Master. I have read and enjoyed this, "The Awakened One Poetics" so much so, that it has awakened my love for the Haiku form of poetry, that was laying dormant within me. This book has shown me inspirational Haiku in a new light, and with all the translations, it has made this a pleasure to read.
There are several lengths and forms of renku poems as follows: the hyakuin (100 stanzas), kasen (36 stanzas), nijuin (20 stanzas), hankasen ("half-kasen" of 18 stanzas), shishi (16 stanzas), jusanbutsu (13 stanzas), and junicho and shisan (each 12 verses). The kasen of thirty-six stanzas is the most common length. Hikari Kumoi has given us an extracted flavoring of her renku style of writing. She is a Japanese poet who started composing renku at Wasada University in 1978 and haiku in 2007.
Yuko Tange is a Japanese poet who reflects grander in her haiku poems. She is a graduate of National Saitama University, Japan, and has studied Haiku poems with Ban’ya Natsuishi.
Sayumi Kamakura is a poet from Japan who has published this wonderful book entitled, "A Crown of Roses." The book is vibrant and presents her views of contemporary haiku poems in a wonderful way. The book is divided into six section and the haiku poems in each section match the corresponding title. She is also the editor for the Ginyu International Haiku Journal.
Clirim Muca resides in Italy and is a member of the World Haiku Association. His recent poetry book entitled "Street Mud" is an excellent read for anyone. The book addresses the four seasons of the year with unique poems for each season.
Harry C. Smith is the author of several books of poetry. He is an articulate orator and writer. This is a wonderful book of uplifting and inspiring poetry. One must read it to enjoy its wonderful poetic words.
The magnificent words and symbolisms regarding the Bodhi Tree are the foundation for the theme of this wonderful book, New Utopia by Kumar, which is consistent throughout its pages. The essence of the theme starts with the Endless Helix lines by Ban’ya Natsuishi, to the concept of End of Summer by Sayumi Kamakura, and the illustrious words of Adam Donaldson Powell articulated in the forward section.
Ban’ya Natsuishi, of the World Haiku Association and author of Endless Helix, really sends an excellent message regarding the essence of haiku in this book. His knowledge of haiku reflects the beauty of nature in his verses, and the loveliness of how nature and language work together in projecting beauty in words.
