How Does Golding Present The Decline From Civilisation to Savagery in "Lord of the Flies"?

The main focus by Golding throughout Lord of the Flies is on the theme of the conflict, and eventual transformation, between civilisation and savagery. Both civilisation and savagery are represented throughout the novel primarily in the form of the two boys Ralph and Jack. Ralph stands throughout the book for common sense, democracy and order, while Jack is the complete opposite, acting more and more like a savage as the book progresses and always wanting autocracy, with him as the leader with power over others. This theme of the decline from civilisation to savagery was intended by Golding to be a response to the optimistic and arguably unrealistic portrayal of the characters in Ballantyne’s The Coral Island, and by writing about this transformation Golding intended to show the true reality of human nature, or in his own words the ‘darkness of man’s heart’.
