Both stories are set in the middle east, and while The Kite Runner deals with the male view of life in this hostile environment, A Thousand Splendid Suns deals with the female point of view. Mariam and Laila, two Afghan women, face oppression, violence, cruelty, and helplessness. Their bond grows stronger as they depend upon each other for survival in a cruel world that seeks to oppress the female gender.
