A Model for Media

Years ago McLuhan wrote a book on understanding media, the way the world is modelled in the image of man and how the home is an extension of his body. He described the course of communication that we have set for the future. He toyed with the idea of the eventual obsolescence of house heating controls, of language and even of the use of clothes. I wonder where an extension to that thought exists today because people still clothe themselves and still adjust their thermostats. But we have been experimenting with new materials that break from the classic collared shirt, the corset and then the brassiere, to allow for more freedom of movement and all this was heralded by McLuhan and those that preceded him.So there has been no elimination of the home with its four containing walls and electrical heat consumption, as I know it, except at the experimental level or for the affluent entrepreneur. The engineering of homes into an organic space is not new and I think that in countries where classical building materials are hard to find or the cost of building a classical structure is too steep, building a home with materials at hand can contribute to a more organic experience.
